kikotei: I’m toumyu trash (So Rough! - Tactics)

I would really like to be doing something productive right now, but I think I won't. First off, I'm freezing. And it's 72 in here. I don't get it ::pulls hair:: And two, my stomach is very unhappy with something I ate. Urg.

Anyway, I rewatched RG Veda and the translations still bother me. I've been picking up the manga, which I love. I don't think Ashura could get any cuter, and Yasha couldn't dote more on that kid. Plus there's the fact that Tokyopop opted to make Ashura a boy for the most part (thank you Tokyopop!). There are stil gender neutral moments, but most of the people around Ashura refer to him as a boy. I like that much better than the anime. The translations make Ashura a girl. >_< Even I know enough Japanese to pick up that Ashura doesn't use the work 'I'. Ashura just uses his name. Like saying Ashura saying "Ashura doesn't snore". Or something to that effect.

And this isn't rabid yaoi fangirl speak. I really prefer Ashura as a boy. Even before I had read the manga, I was only really familiar with the anime, and calling Ashura a girl just didn't sit right with me.

I think I'll watch some of Saiyuki Reload and then curl up under my nice toasty blankets and try to write.

Tokyopop is famous for their gender switching issues with CLAMP work. (See Wish and the suddenly female Kohaku who was gender neutral as well as Dita (another gender neutral) from Chobits). I don't really mind myself the sudden swing from neuter to a boy because it does fit, particularly with Ashura's personality and the way he speaks. And yes, I've seen the OAV for RG Veda. To be honest, I wasn't too thrilled with the OAV for that (it seemed to skimp in a lot of ways) though that's not saying much seeing as I wasn't happy with how the Tokyo Babylon manga was crammed into an OAV (which at times is a little incomprehensible). Maybe I'm being picky but none of the adaptions of CLAMP's works from manga to anime have translated as well.

Randomly, hi since I haven't talked to you before now. And I hope you feel better. ^^

Yes, the whole reason I hunted down original copies of Wish after I heard about the switch. That bothered me to no end.

And I've noticed that CLAMP stuff generally doesn't translate well into anime. A lot of it will start out good, and then in the end disappoint.

And hi back. ^_^ I was happy to see you have a journal since you've been quiet on the DHML.

Same here. I'm not sure what the issue with gender neutrals is but apparently publishers feel that Americans can't handle it and give how well manga is selling now...to say little of yaoi manga... it seems rather absurd, doesn't it? Then again if you look at the yaoi publications and the strict rules they have laid down for them just to get published over here, maybe that says more about American mores and tastes than a little.

I agree with that. In fact, I'm trying to think if there's an anime out there that was based off CLAMP that hasn't made me want to spork the animators by the time it was over with. CCD was far too sugary as an anime, ditto for CCS. TB didn't make sense and well, we've both seen RG Veda. Rayearth was cutesy and fairly true to the manga, I suppose though I'll admit I wasn't fond of X at all. I much prefer the manga for X. The jury is still out over here on Tsubasa though I'm curious to see if they can actually pull off an XXXholic movie.

LOL. Yeah, part of the quiet is not having anything to post. I need to go back and finish a few fics which will undoubtedly happen since I still love Duo and Heero as opposed to a few other fandoms which have worn off in the intervening time. Of late I've been playing with CLAMP and Weiss and watching Loveless. I still have twinges for the boys though and I figure if I can randomly get inspired to write Yami again, writing GW won't be that hard at all. And maybe it's me but as far as I can see, the only active yahoogroups these days seem to be the Gundam Wing inspired ones. Has everyone else moved to LJ or is GW fandom just that invicible? I've had conversations about fic and trying to find it these days with [livejournal.com profile] kasra_c and maybe this is just one of those spells but it does seem like it's harder to find fan fiction these days (outside of GW), especially on LJ.

And I blather but I was happy to see you pop up. ^^

I'm not sure what the problem with gender neutral is either. But whatever it is, I really wish they would get over it. With the yaoi manga being published here, I almost automatically age everyone down a couple of years now. Although, with books like Level C, it's terribly amusing to see the editors miss references to Mizuki's age. One page they're saying he's a college student, and less than halfway down the same page he's back to being a high schooler. Ha!

I'm just watching CCS now (talk about being behind -_-;;) and it is horribly sweet, so I tend to look for Toya/Yukito moments. Keeps me occupied. What sections of the manga are in the show are done reasonably well. I missed CCD when it was out. Drat. I'm hoping Bandai rereleases it as a DVD collection, seeing as the aniversary edition is out in Japan. More torture for myself. I don't think I even finished TB, but what I did watch made little sense. X has been brutalized so often, the beginning of the series was alright, but it just went downhill from there. As far as Tsubasa, I've seen the first few episodes and so far so good. There are some rather larger differences, but nothing that really ruins the overall outcome.

I'm trying to get back into writing GW myself (when Hikaru no Go bunnies aren't gnawing on me), I've got a massive one in the works now. But getting ready for cosplaying at Otakon is sucking up most of my free time. I think everyone has moved to LJ for the most part. It's getting harder to find really good mailing lists anymore. New fandoms have certainly moved almost exclusively to communities like LJ. I toyed very very briefly with the LJ idea to suppliment the DHML, but we seem to be doing alright as an older community. Then again, GW may just be invicible. The characters are just perfect fandom fodder. And the DHML has certainly grown in the last year or so. We went from being a fairly small group to over 1000. And all the while, the general groups have grown very very quiet.
