I'm finally done with summer reading. No more handing out raffle tickets, stickers or little prizes. ::happy sigh::

However it's things like our summer reading contest that gives me hope for many of the children I deal with. That perhaps we'll have some decent and intelligent human beings out of this batch.

For our summer reading contest all kids who are reading independantly earn one raffle ticket for every hour of reading they complete. We had over 856 kids sign up to participate. While of course that's not all the kids in town that is very very impressive for a small town where kids are more often playing sports or gameboys than they are found reading.

Also during the course of the summer program from Mid-June to tonight, these kids (and any others who just didn't want to sign up) read more than 20,000 books. I am very very impressed.

And a little sunburned.
